Atempo: Data Protection and Data Management For Complex Environments

Open format promotes democracy.

As data grows in complexity and volume, it becomes increasingly difficult to protect and manage. Data protection and management solutions must evolve to meet the needs of modern businesses. Atempo offers a suite of products that can help your business manage its data more effectively. Our products are designed for complex environments, and they can help you keep your data safe and accessible.

The 41st IT Press Tour had the opportunity to meet with Ferhat Kaddour, VP Sales & Alliances, Louis-Frederic Laszlo, Director of Product Management at Atempo. Luc D’Urso, CEO shared his thoughts via video recording due to COVID.

Overview

Atempo is a data management and data protection ISV with more than 2,000 customers worldwide and a proven track record managing complex environments in media and entertainment, HPC research, healthcare, and government.

The company has strong technical expertise protecting and migrating large data volumes with the ability to grasp complex workflows on-premises and in the cloud. Rich technological ecosystems enable the company to provide broad support of various use cases. Solutions have the ability to scale from TBs to exabytes as the flexible product architecture is designed for performance and reliability.

Atempo uses an open format to promote democracy. They believe collusion between large technology companies is a threat to democracy. They enable customers to work with who and what technology providers they want without vendor lock-in. They believe freedom of choice provides fairness for customers and enables customers to make the choices that are best for their business.

Data Protection and Data Management

Atempo is focusing on two lines of business: 1) data protection with cybercrime, data atomization, and hybrid infrastructures; and 2) data management with the data tsunami, regulation, and compliance.

These are the areas in which their clients and prospects have expressed the greatest need. The most sensitive customers are enterprise and mid-size. Data management is in high demand in media, research, industrial modeling, autonomous driving, CCTV, and oil and gas.

Tackling modern data protection challenges with Lina for endpoints, Tina for applications, and Yoo Backup for virtualization. Data management is driven by an AI-powered platform

Accessibility is made easy through a new portal for data protection and an AI-powered data management platform for discovery, analysis, decision, and action.

Atempo provides Data Protection across endpoints, applications (on-prem and SaaS), legacy, virtual, and DRaaS with the following features:

  • Wide compatibility guide – physical or virtual

  • Time navigation – finer management of backup policies

  • Source deduplication – reduces storage space and bandwidth

  • Disaster Recovery – for business continuity

  • Microsoft 365 Protection – emails, OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint

  • Fast backup and restore – 1-click restart, express restart

  • Backup security – 3–2–1 backup strategy for data immutability

Atempo helps customers resist ransomware via:

  • Continuous data protection – automatically saves all changes made to data and reduces data loss to a minimum in the event of a cyber attack.

  • Long retention period – deduplication allows data retention to be extended to go back far enough before the attack.

  • Bare metal restores – in the event of an attack, BMR allows an identical restore of the machine, OS, and data.

  • Two-factor authentication – secured access to the administration console via an authentication app.

  • Native data encryption – encryption capacity of all communications and data to prevent the possible use or dissemination of data.

  • Time navigation – capacity to visualize file explorer at a date in the past for easy restoration.

  • Linux server – possibility to install the Lina Server on a Linux machine whatever the OS of the agents, thus limiting the amount of cryptovirus attacks.

  • Controlled access to backup – the backup medium is online but only accessible through a proprietary protocol thus limiting the exposure to crypto viruses.

Atempo data protection will be 100% MSP-driven. A multi-services portal will facilitate all subscriptions, monitoring, and billing. It will be a multi-storage service from SaaS to on-prem to the appliance.

The typical Fortune 1000 company has 3 to 5 different data protection and data management solutions to meet all their needs. It is difficult to manage environments that are only file-based and require specialized solutions.

Reasons Customers Choose

  1. Migration - started with a free or paid solution and not getting where they want or need to go

  2. Archive – ability to scale on large volumes and small file sizes

  3. Cost efficiency ratio on the table

  4. Broad compatibility – one solution addresses all workflows

Reasons Customer Do Not Choose

  1. Lack of awareness

  2. Better training is needed for channel partners

  3. Customer loves what they see but their channel partner is building an all-in-one solution with a competitor and they don’t want to revisit what they are doing

Competitors

  • Datadobi in migration

  • Commvault in enterprise

Customer Stories

  • Qumulo – Back up all video and activity from the subway in Canada. Archived 16PB of data from a NAS to Tape (LT08/9). Managed large files like video surveillance equipment files and small files from traffic information. Able to search and restore any file over a period of five years while ensuring the integrity of the archived file.

  • Defense industry - Backup of 5000 encrypted Windows workstations on 10 sites in France. Lina 5.2 servers running Red Hat 8.4 are deployed in three data centers. Workstations are backed up every 15 minutes via LAN or WAN.

  • Hospital cyberattack 2019 - Friday, November 15, 7:45 pm: detection of a massive cyberattack that caused total IT paralysis. Total shutdown of the information system as a precaution. Restarting the most critical servers and restoring the last backed-up version. Saturday, November 16: open call and on-call service assistance and professional services. The most critical services are restored – emergency, patient admissions, and prescriptions. Sunday, November 17: an important part of the data was restored. Restored VMs via the System Recovery Agent module. Monday, November 18: intervention of ANSSI experts, investigations began. Identification of the CLOP Ransomware that caused the cyberattack.
