Accelerate Cloud-Native Transformation for Storage and Network Services

Manage unified workflows across multiple domains.

I had the opportunity to meet with Partha Seetala, Founder and CEO, Ankur Desai, Director of Product, and Brooke Frischemeier, Senior Director of Product Management, 5G and Edge at Robin for an update on their business. The IT Press Tour last met with Robin about a year ago.

Partha observed that the last two years have seen the emergence of 5G networks enabling consumers to stream video and post it on social networks. The new capabilities provided by 5G are driving accelerated adoption and success of smart cities and smart cars built on cloud-native architecture. Rakuten's 5G network is built atop Robin's platform.

Robin Cloud-Native Storage (CNS) accelerates deployment of all stateful apps on Kubernetes (K8s). It simplifies day-two operations so developers and ITOps don't have to be storage experts able to manage snapshots, clones, or backups. Robin CNS is application-centric and enables multi-cloud portability.

Robin Cloud-Native Platform (CNP) for 5G and edge use cases uses open-source K8s optimized for carrier-grade telecommunications applications. It provides any application-as-a-service via a private app store and supports VMs as well as containers on K8s.

Robin Multi-Data Cluster Automation Platform (MCAP) automates management to bare-metal servers with metal-to-service orchestration and automation.

Robin is working to simplify application data management. As more enterprises are implementing a DevOps methodology, there's no delineation of responsibilities, and the people responsible for keeping apps up and running are not storage experts. Everything around storage and data management needs to be easy to use and able to be automated with a single command to manage.

The multi-cloud environment exemplifies the challenge since many customers use the default storage clusters on the public cloud. When they do this, data management gets much more complex since there are few providers that work across all clouds.

Robin provides automated workload placement everywhere making it simpler for users by determining their intent and modeling everything based on declarative, intent-based input. Robin discovers resources across clusters and data centers, deploys the model, configures it for you, and manages the lifecycle. This results in the entire application platform being up and running in minutes versus weeks.

Customers are seeing greater CapEx and OpEx efficiency. A 40% reduction in OpEx with scalable orchestration and automation for RAN and core. 50% reduction in CapEx by enabling Pen RAN and core on commercial hardware. An 80% reduction in deployment time from 10 days to minutes and 30% faster runtimes on VNFs and CNFs. And, it's doing this at scale with 6PB big data apps, 2.5 PB ELK, Kafka, 300 nodes, and 400 production databases.

Partha wrapped up by noting that every storage solution checks all the boxes on fundamentals of snapshots and backups. However, few solutions are architected on current use cases with multiple deployments, hundreds of databases, and multiple clouds. Solutions based on 10-year-old technology deployed to K8s will not scale and are not feasible in large networks.

If you are running a proof of concept do so for a longer period of time (e.g., several days) to measure performance. See how easy it is to migrate apps from one node to another. On 5G, look at how quickly you are able to onboard network functions on a large network with multiple applications.
