Unstructured Data Migration Across Hybrid Multi-Cloud Environments

Hybrid environments add complexity and compliance challenges to maintain data integrity.

I had the opportunity to speak with Michael Jack, Co-Founder & V.P. of Global Sales and Carl D’Halluin, CTO of Datadobi. They’ve been providing unstructured data migration solutions after working on EMC Centera. Initially, they focused on Centara management and migration and then network-attached storage (NAS) migration. They are now supporting S3 migrations.

The addition of S3-to-S3 object migrations provides a flexible and holistic software suite for migrating unstructured data. Customers can move data in any direction between on-prem systems of different vendors, cloud storage services, or any combination thereof. All objects and their metadata are synchronized from the source buckets to the target buckets.

With existing support for all NAS protocols, DobiMigrate customers benefit from the complete flexibility to migrate or reorganize their file and object storage data. According to Carl, “We have always been a company that can manage our customer’s most difficult migration projects and have been involved in a number of different types of object migration projects over the years. In this release, we are incorporating everything we have learned about S3 object migrations into our DobiMigrate product, making it available to everyone. We have tested it with the major S3 platforms including AWS to enable our customers’ journey to and from the cloud.”

Unstructured data helps customers manage through data reorganization for the optimization of more petabytes. Companies want to reorganize data to have a better profile. While users can get into AWS S3 buckets inexpensively, it costs a lot to read and process the data. Datadobi helps customers put applications and data where it best performs and is the most cost-efficient. Backblaze is 5X cheaper for egress than AWS.

Datadobi is committed to giving customers the flexibility to determine what data belongs in a public cloud versus on-premises and gives them the ability to move it back and forth as needed.

They are also seeing aging object stores on-premises and many enterprises do not want to perform 24/7 monitoring, so they will move to the cloud even though prices change monthly and the predictability of the bill is low. For example, a homeschool company moved to the cloud but as cloud use increased 10X, their costs increased 10X and they’ve had to move to their own data center.

Hybrid environments have heightened complexity and need to maintain data integrity to meet industry compliance and regulatory requirements and Datadobi enables customers to migrate any amount of file and object data between any storage platform.

Use Cases

  • The University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) used DobiMigrate NAS to manage 1,200 individual migration paths at 26K ops per second and 5GB/10GB line rates to migrate hundreds of millions of files in 6 hours versus 40 hours using a legacy tool.

  • DTI, a legal process outsourcing (LPO) company serving law firms, acquired Merrill Corporation Legal Solutions and used Datadobi to migrate more than 400 TBs of file data (more than 3.6 billion files) from a NetApp CDOT in St. Paul, Minnesota to a Dell EMC Isilon in Atlanta, Georgia. All of the data migrated with minimal downtime and no disruption to their business.
